sites are usually relatively flat. A temporary mud pit is constructed next to the drill site. All suitable <br />topsoil material is salvaged from the mud pit areas and placed in the topsoil stockpile. The mud <br />pits are about 20' x 10' x 6'. Any runoff water and /or water /drilling mud mixture is generally <br />collected in the mud pit. The mud pits effectively serve as the sediment control structures for the <br />disturbance during drilling. Sediment control of the drill pad areas is achieved by various methods <br />described in Illustration 44. See Illustration 44 "Typical Borehole, Exploration, and Shaft Pads ", <br />"Drill Sites — Gentle Slopes ", and "Drill Sites with Good Cover". During the grazing period from <br />December 1 through April 15, the mud pits will be left in a reasonably dry condition so they do not <br />pose a hazard to sheep. <br />Upon successful drilling and hole completion, the overburden from the mud pits is backfilled and <br />smoothed out. The disturbed area (drill site and mud pits) is ripped to a minimum depth of one <br />foot below grade prior to topsoil replacement. Stockpiled topsoil is spread evenly back over the <br />disturbed site. Sediment control of the disturbed area will be maintained during revegetation <br />according to the measures described above. Drill site seed mix, shown in Tablet/ -10, is broadcast <br />seeded and raked in. Access to the hole is necessary to monitor the success of the de- gassing <br />effort. Access roads used during drilling and monitoring of vent holes will be scarified and <br />reseeded next fall after such access is no longer required. <br />III.A.9 Underground Transportation Rubber tired vehicles are used to carry personnel and <br />supplies from the surface to the underground mining area. <br />Coal is transported from the working areas by belt conveyors. The slope conveyor delivers the <br />coal to the surface coal handling facilities. <br />111113 Surface Support Facilities <br />Before the run -of -mine (ROM) coal can be shipped to the power plant, all or part of it is processed <br />in a preparation plant to remove some of the impurities. Coal handling and preparation facilities <br />have been constructed in the SE1 /4, Sec. 4, T2N, R101 W (Maps 1 and 2). <br />111111.113.1 Coal Handling and Storage The ROM coal is transported out of the mine portal on a <br />54 -inch conveyor belt. A series of conveyors then transport the coal through the various storage <br />and preparation facilities. All conveyors are partially covered or totally enclosed to reduce dust <br />emissions and protect the belt from the weather.
