Appendix L
Map Unit Description (Brief, Generated)
Douglas -Plateau Area, Colorado, Parts of Garfield and Mesa Counties
(Minor map unit components are excluded from this report]
Map unit: 2 - Badland
Component: Badland (80%)
Generated brief soil descriptions are created for major soil components. The Badland is a miscellaneous area.
Map unit: 15 - Cameo fine sandy loam, 1 to 6 percent slopes
Component: Cameo (90%)
The Cameo component makes up 90 percent of the map unit. Slopes are 1 to 6 percent. This component is on
terraces, flood plains. The parent material consists of calcareous, stratified, mixed material alluvium. Depth to a
root restrictive layer is greater than 60 inches. The natural drainage class is well drained. Water movement in
the most restrictive layer is high. Available water to a depth of 60 inches is moderate. Shrink -swell potential is
low. This soil is rarely flooded. It is not ponded. There is no zone of water saturation within a depth of 72 inches.
Organic matter content in the surface horizon is about 1 percent. This component is in the R034XY407CO
Saltdesert Overflow ecological site. Nonirrigated land capability classification is 6c. Irrigated land capability
classification is 3e. This soil does not meet hydric criteria. The calcium carbonate equivalent within 40 inches,
typically, does not exceed 90 percent.
Map unit: 47 - Hesperus-Empedrado, moist -Pagoda complex 5 to 35 percent slopes
Component: Hesperus (35%)
The Hesperus component makes up 35 percent of the map unit. Slopes are 5 to 35 percent. This component is
on mountainsides. The parent material consists of residuum weathered from sandstone and shale. Depth to a
root restrictive layer is greater than 60 inches. The natural drainage class is well drained. Water movement in
the most restrictive layer is moderately high. Available water to a depth of 60 inches is high. Shrink -swell
potential is moderate. This soil is not flooded. it is not ponded. There is no zone of water saturation within a
depth of 72 inches. Organic matter content in the surface horizon is about 4 percent. This component is in the
R048AY238CO Brushy Loam ecological site. Nonirrigated land capability classification is 6e. This soil does not
meet hydric criteria.
Component: Empedrado, moist (30%)
The Empedrado, moist component makes up 30 percent of the map unit. Slopes are 5 to 35 percent. This
component is on benches. The parent material consists of colluvium derived from sandstone and shale and/or
residuum weathered from sandstone and shale. Depth to a root restrictive layer is greater than 60 inches. The
natural drainage class is well drained. Water movement in the most restrictive layer is moderately high.
Available water to a depth of 60 inches is high. Shrink -swell potential is low. This soil is not flooded. It is not
ponded. There is no zone of water saturation within a depth of 72 inches. Organic matter content in the surface
horizon is about 3 percent. This component is in the R048A Y238CO Brushy Loam ecological site. Nonirrigated
land capability classification is 6e. This soil does not meet hydric criteria. The calcium carbonate equivalent
within 40 inches, typically, does not exceed 8 percent.
USDA Natural Resources
Survey Area Version: 4
Conservation Service Survey Area Version Date: 12/05/2006
Page 1
