2.04.4 Cultural and Historic Resources Information
(1) Cultural and Historic Resource Reports are presented in Appendix J.
During the fourth quarter of 1980 a Class II (sampling) cultural resources
inventory was conducted by the Grand River Institute, on approximately 6,100
acres of lands included in the McClane and Munger Canyons Mine
Plan/Permit Areas. The sample was made on those lands which had less
than 10 degree slope: 875 acres (14%) were surveyed. Two prehistoric sites,
5GF741, a rock- shelter, and 5GF742, a pictograph site, and one historic
ranch complex, 5GF743, were recorded. All three were in good condition and
may provide important information on the prehistory and history of western
Colorado. The site, 5GF741, is considered to be potentially eligible to the
National Register; more data is needed for a final determination of its
eligibility. A rare and undisturbed find, site 5GF742, is considered to be
eligible to the National Register. The historic site 5GF743 is on private land
and a determination of eligibility should be requested from the State Historic
Preservation Officer. Two of the sites, 5GF742 and 5GF743, are near an area
previously disturbed by Sheridan Enterprises; both were avoided, however,
and remain undisturbed. It is unlikely that future development will affect either,
but both should be fully documented should such occur.
A November 2009 Cultural Resource Survey performed by Grand River
Institute resulted in the recording of two newly identified cultural resources
and a segment of a previously recorded ditch. The segment of the historic
Davenport Ditch, 5GF879.6 and sheltered/rock art site 5GF4376 have been
field evaluated as eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic
Places. Protection and preservation are recommended. Linear site
5GF4377.1, the East Salt Creek Canyon Trail, has been field. Avoidance of
this resource is recommended.
A May 2012 Cultural Resource Survey performed by Grand River Institute
resulted in the recording of one newly identified resource, 5GF.4692, a
historic road. The historic road is field evaluated as not eligible for listing on
the National Register of Historic Places, and no further work is recommended.
PR -02 2.04-4 10/12
