2.04.10 Vegetation Information
PLANT SPECIES COLLECTION AND IDENTIFICATION
Plant species were collected throughout the 1980 growing season. Species were
identified by field ecologists conducting the study and confirmed by Dr. William A
Weber, Curator of Herbarium, University of Colorado. Taxonomic nomenclature follows
Weber and Johnston (1979). Weber (1976), Nickerson et al. (1976), and Beetle (1970)
were consulted in an attempt to apply the most widely utilized common names. Primary
selenium indicators are in accordance with WDEQ Guideline No. 2 as revised March
1979.
Noxious weed designators follow Thorton et at. (1974). Statements of origin or
provenance follow Weber and Johnston (1979) and other sources. Voucher specimens
have been preserved in a reference collection.
Species richness indices for each affected and reference community were
determined with the formula:
species richness = s/log N,
where S equals the number of species in a sample and N equals the total number of
individuals (transects) in a sample (Whittaker 1975). Equitability indices were
determined for each community using the formula:
S N 1091 N
L
where n; equals the cover value for each species encountered in a community and N
equals the total vegetation cover in a community.
TIME OF SAMPLING
Vegetation cover data was collected in July 1980, production plots clipped in July
and August 1980, and density data collected in July, August, and September 1980.
PR -02 2.04-55 10/12
