PART 111
Page 50 of 52
Permit No.: C00000906
31. SAR and Adjusted SAR - The equation for calculation of SAR-adj is:
SAR-adj = Na+
Ca,
+-
2
Where:
Na'= Sodium in the effluent reported in meq/1
Mg-= Magnesium in the effluent reported in meq /I
Ca,,= calcium (in meq/l) in the effluent modified due to the ratio of bicarbonate to calcium
The values for sodium (Na+), calcium (Ca++), bicarbonate (HCO3-) and magnesium (Mg++) in this equation are
expressed in units of milliequivalents per liter (meq/1). Generally, data for these parameters are reported in terms
of mg/l, which must then be converted to calculate the SAR. The conversions are:
meq/1 =
Concentraffon in mg / l
Equivalent weight in mg / meq
Where the equivalent weights are determined based on the atomic weight of the element divided by the ion's
charge:
Na' = 23.0 mg/meq (atomic weight of 23, charge of 1)
Ca++ = 20.0 mg/meq (atomic weight of 40.078, charge of 2)
Mg++ = 12.15 mg/meq (atomic weight of 24.3, charge of 2)
HCO3- = 61 mg/mep (atomic weight of 61, charge of 1)
The EC and the HCO3 -/Ca++ratio in the effluent (calculated by dividing the HCO3 - in meq/l by the Ca -in meq/t)
are used to determine the Ca,( using the following table.
Table - Modified Calcium Determination for Adlusted Sodium Adsorption Katio
HCO3/Ca Ratio And EC', z, 3
- ----- _ -- - - -- - --- -- -- -- - --- - -- --------------- -- ----
Salinity of Effluent (EC)(dS/m)
0.5 ; 0.7 ; 1.01.5 2 0 ! 3.0 4.0 j 6.0 1 8.0
.05' 13.201, 13.61 13.921 _14.40; 14.79; 15.26- 15.91; 16.43 17.28 17.97 19.07! 19.94
.10` 8.31; 8.57; 8.771 9.07; 9.311 9.62' 10.02! 10.35 10.89 11.321 12.017 12.56
6.341
6.541
6.69,
6.921,
7.111
7.34
7.65;
7.90;
8.31i
8.641,
9.171
9.58
.20;
5.24
5 40
5.52
5 71:
5.87
6.06
6.31
6.52
6.861
7.131
7.57 7.91
.25'
4.511
4.65 -
-4.761-
- 4.92;--
5.06,
5.22
5.44'
-5.62, --
5.91 ?-
6.15
_
6.52,
6.82
.301
4.00}
4.1 24.21'
.--_
4.36
4.62
4.821
4.98
-5.24)
5445.77T
6.04
.35
3.61
3.72
3.80 j3.94;
4.48i
4.04
4.17
4.35 `
4.49T4.721
4.911
5.21;'
5.45
.40;
3.301
3.40;
3.48
3.60;
3.701
3.82.
3.98;
4.11'
4.32-4.491
4.77-!
4.98
Ratio of;
.45
3.051
3.14;
3.22;
3.33
3.42
3.53
3.68,
3.80
4.00,1
4.15T
4.41;
4.61
.50;
2.84'
2.931
3.00;
3.10:
3.19;
3.29
3.431
3.54
3.721
3.874.11,
4.30
.75;
2.171
2.24;
2.29!
2.37
2.43'
2.51
2.621
2.70
--2.84.
2.951---3.14
--3.28
1.00;
1.79;
1.85.
1.89;
1.96
2.01:
2.09
2.161
2.231:
2.35;
2.44;
2.59;
2.71
1.251!
- 1.54T
1.59 -1.63x--1.68
1.50:
1.37:
1.41,
1.44'
1.49:1.53;
1.58:
1.651
1.70'
1.79;
1.861
1.971,
2.07
1.75;
1.21
1.271
1.301
1.35;
1.381
1.43;
1.49;
1.54:
1.62;
1.68;
1.781
1.86
2.00
1.131
1.16'
1.19;
1.23;
1.26;
1.31,
1.361
1.40
1.48;
1.54;
1.63;
1.70
2.25;
1.04;
1.08
1.101
1.14;
1.17!
1.21:
1.26;
1.30
1.37;
1.421
1.51;
1.58
