C
L
STUDY AREAS
The Allen Mine permit area included the Ponderosa pine -oak,
Ponderosa pine-Doualas fir -oak, and willow carr vegetation types.
The Ponderosa pine -oak vegetation type occurred on a north-facinq
slope of about 27° with an elevation of 7500 ft. It was character-
ized by pure stands of Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) interspersed
with patches of Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii). Other overstory spe-
cies were pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) and Rocky Mountain juniper
(Juniperus scopulorum). Other shrub species were snowberry
(Symphoricarpos oreophilus) and mountain mahogany (Cercocarous
montanus). Understory species consisted of annual and perennial
forbs and grasses such as Carex sp., Parry oatarass (Danthonia oarryi),
side -oats arama (Bouteloua curtipendula), blue arama (Bouteloua
gracilis), elegant cinquefoil (Potentilla concinna), star gentian (Swertia
radiata), and Fendler meadowrue (Thalictrum fendleri). Openinas in
the tree canopy were dominated by Gambel oak and occasional stands
of mountain mahogany. Parry oatgrass formed tussocks in the openinns.
The soil was a light brown sandy loam.
The Ponderosa pine -Douglas fir -oak vegetation type was located
on a north -facing slope at 7600 ft. elevation and with a slooe of 300.
It consisted of an overstory of mainly Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa)
and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). Other tree species were
pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) and Rocky Mountain juniper (Junioerus
scooulorum). Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) was a major shrub species,
E
•
