C
Ic
10
high cover value for the forbs, at 0.20. Total plant cover averaged
4.01'. Cover by litter and rock was 82.01 and by plant -litter -rock was
86.0%. Bare ground averaged 17.3%. Sample adequacy for cover was 33
plots; 35 were sampled.
Carex spp. (0.1 gms/m2), Danthoniaap rryi (0.6 gms/m2), and
Andropogon scoparium (0.4 gms/m2) were the most productive species
(Table 3). Total production averaged 3.0 gms/m2. Sample adequacy
for production required 19 samples, and 24 were obtained (Table 2).
Cercocarpus montanus was the most dense shrub at 0.6 shrubs/mz,
or 46% of all shrubs (Table 4). Quercus gambelii was the next most
dense, at 0.5 shrub/m2, or 38% of all shrubs. Average shrub density
was 1.3 shrubs/m2.
Pinus ponderosa was the most dense tree, at 720 trees/ha, or
64% of all trees (Table 4). Pinus edulis saplings had the highest den-
sity, at 120 trees/ha, or 11%. Average tree and sapling density was
1,120 trees/ha.
The dominants for both the affected area and.reference area
were Pinus ponderosa and Quercus gambelii. Important understory
species were Carex spp., Danthonia oa, rryi, and Andropoaon scoparium
in both the affected and reference areas. Herbaceous plant cover and
production were low in this vegetation type due to the abundance of
pine litter. Cercocarpus montanus was an important shrub in the
reference area.
•
