Subplots were treated with
appropriate levels of fertilizer which were subsequently rototilled into the
spoils (Figure 9). Seeding followed by a broadcasting method at a rate of
12.8 kg pure live seed (PLS)/ha (634 PLS/m2) and raked to lightly cover with
soil. Finally, excelsior or straw mulch was added to designated treatments.
Slope Plot
The Slope Plots were constructed on a southeast -facing slope. One
plot is graded on a 3:1 slope and the second to 1.5:1. Treatments used, and .
their arrangement, appear in Figure 9. Three treatments, measuring 7.5x6.0 m,
were installed in two replications. All treatments were fertilized with
220 kg P205/ha and 66 kg N/ha and broadcast seeded at a rate of 43 kg pure
live seed (PLS)/ha (1450 PLS/m2). The fertilizer and seed were raked into the
soil and mulch, as either straw (2240 kg/ha) or excelsior matting, was applied.
Species used on the Slope Plot are listed in Table 11. The treatments
examined are outlined below.
Treatment 1: 220 kg P205/ha, 66 kg N/ha, + excelsior mulch
Treatment 2: 220 kg P205/ha, 66 kg N/ha, + straw mulch
Treatment 3: 220 kg P 0 /ha, 66 kg N/ha, + straw mulch + topsoil (to a
depth of 15 cm)
