C
ALLEN MINE
Methods
Three study plots were established at the Allen Mine: The Main Plot and
Species Evaluation Plot are located on a level area of the shale waste
material; the Slope Plot is situated 20 m north of the Main Plot on a southeast -
facing slope (Figure 9).
Main Plot
The plot arrangement is a split plot block design with three replications
uniform application of 220 kg P205/ha as triple phosphate and 66 kg K20/ha as
muriate of potash. Each treatment was split and half treated with 3,360 kg of
gypsum per hectare (Figure 9). The phosphorus, potassium, and gypsum were
surface appliedna d worked into the waste material by rototilling. Nitrogen
additions as ammonium nitrate in Treatments 3-8 was added in split applications:
half applied in November 1976 and the remainder in May 1977. Treatments
studied included:
Treatment 1: Control (no fertilizer, no mulch)
Treatment 2: 220 kg P205/ha, 66 kg K20/ha
Treatemnt 3: 220 kg P205/ha, 66 kg K20/ha, 66 kg N/ha
Treatment 4: 220 kg P205/ha, 66 kg K20/ha, 132 kg N/ha
Treatment 5: 220 kg P205/ha, 66 kg K20/ha, 66 kg N/ha + excelsior mulch •
41
of eight
treatments, each split
by an
application
of
gypsum.
Subplots measure
C3.1x9.0
m.
