29 <br />• plot collects a greater amount of solar radiation due to its pitch; this <br />is especially true in the summer months which coincide with the season of <br />peak plant growth. The increased heat load on the plants inhibits growth <br />by disrupting physical and chemical processes. <br />The gentler 3:1 slope shows little erosion and much more vigorous <br />plant growth. It appears that water infiltration was greater and heat load <br />was less on the shallow slope. <br />Treatment 1 (15 cm of topsoil with straw mulch) supported the most <br />vigorous growth of seeded species. The grasses, forbs and shrubs providing <br />the best growth on the slope plots were those which are listed as most <br />successful in the Main Plot discussion (Table 7 ), with the addition of <br />the forb, small burnet (Sanguisorba minor). <br />•t. <br />0�— <br />
