14
pine -oak vegetation type. Again, the occurrence of dense litter and •
shade from the tree canopy restricted abundant herbaceous (understory)
growth. Grass species and several (orbs were dominants.
Cover values for the willow carr reference area are presented
in Table 13. Artemisia dracunculus had a mean cover value of 8.5'.
Linaria vuloaris had a mean cover value of 5.6, Carex sp. had a mean
cover value of 5.5%, Cirsium vulgare had a mean cover value of 4.7°„
Juncus sp, had a mean cover value of 4.4°x, and Eriaeron speciosus had
a mean cover value of 3.4%. The remaining species had mean cover
values of 2.8% and below. Most of the orass species fell into this
lower category. The total mean herbaceous cover was 49.5x, litter
accounted for 44.4% of the cover, and bare ground accounted for 5.9%
No rocks were encountered.
Production values for the willow carr reference area are pre-
i
sented in Table 14. Linaria vulgaris had a mean production of 12.9
gms/m2, and Juncus sp. had a mean production of 11.8 qms/m2. Carex sp.
had a mean production of 9.3 gms/m2, Artemisia dracunculus had a mean
production of 9.2 gms/m2, and Cirsium vulgare had a mean production of
8.1 gms/m2. The remaining species had production means of 3.9 gms/m2
and below. The total mean production for the .willow carr reference
area was 74.5 gms/m2. .
Density measurements for the willow carr reference area are
presented in Table 15. No trees or saplings were encountered. In the
shrub category, Salix exigua had a mean density of 1.1/m2, and Rosa
woodsii had a mean density of 0.3/m2. The total shrub density was
1.4 individuals/n2.
