10
production value of 2.8 gms/m2. The remaining understory species •
had low and minor production values. The total mean production for
the pinyon -juniper understory was 35.7 gms/m 2.
Density measurements for shrubs, trees and saplings in the
pinyon -juniper site are given in Table 6. In the shrub category,
Artemisia frioida had a mean density of 2.4/m2. Quercus gambelii had
a mean density of 0.6/m2, and Xanthocephalum sarothrae had a mean den-
sity of 0.4/m2. In the tree category, Pinus edulis had a mean density
of 5.3/100m2 and Junioerus scooulorum had a mean density of 4.0/100m2.
Abies concolor, Pinus ponderosa, and Pseudotsuoa menziesii were minor
tree species, with mean densities of 0.3/100m2, 0.8/100m2 and 0/1m2,
respectively. No Pinus edulis saplings were encountered, and
Pseudotsuga menziesii had the highest density count of the saplings,
with a value of 1.8/100m2. Juninerus scooulorum saplings had a mean —.
C
density of 0.3/100in2, and Pinus oondorosa saplings had a mean density
of 0.3/100m2. Total mean density for 100n2 was 12.5, and for lm was
4.1.
Dominant species in the pinyon -juniper understory .,ere
Astracalus striatus, Astragalus flexuosus, and Townsendia eximia. In
general, forbs were dominant, and grasses were minor species.
Pinus edulis and. Juninerus scopulorum were dominant true species.
Based on density measurements, Artemisia frinida was the dominant
shrub. Pseudotsuca menziesii had the largest occurrence of saplings,
although no mature trees of that species were encountered.
The Allen Mine encompassed three separate vegetation types:
Ponderosa pine -Douglas fir -oak, Ponderosa pine -oak, and willow carr.
The mean cover values for the Ponderosa pine -Douglas fir -oak type
