i
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Vegetation cover, production and density means are discussed
for each separate reference area and its corresponding vegetation
type. Dominant species are selected for each type based on cover,
production and density means. These dominant species are discussed
in relation to their physical environment.
The Maxwell Mine, including the grassland and pinyon -juniper
types will be discussed first. Table 1 shows the mean cover values
for the grassland reference area. Bouteloua gracilis had a mean
cover value of 31.3°x, Artemisia fri ida had a mean cover value of .
7.5`.S, Carex eleocharis had a mean cover value of 3.505, and
Xanthocephalum sarothrae had a mean cover value of 2.7a. The remain-
ing grasses and forbs had mean cover values of 1.8' and below. Total
mean cover for the grassland site was 52.3'x. Bare around accounted
for 33.55 of sampled areas, litter accounted for 14.0°5, and rock
accounted for 0.2`1. (Tables are found in Appendix B.)
Production means for the grassland type are given in Table 2.
Bouteloua gracilis had a mean production value of 23.5 gms/m 2.
Artemisia frigida had a mean production value of 8.1 gms/m2,
Astragalus missouriensis had a mean production value of 5.9 gms/m2,
Xanthocephalum sarothrae had a mean production value of 4.9 gms/m2,
and Carex eleocharis had a mean production value of 3.7 gms/m2. The
remaining species had mean production values of 1.5 gms/m2 and below. .
Total mean production for the grassland site was 52.5 gms/m 2.
Q
