Slope <br />is 3 to 25 percent. The native vegetaCion is mainly pinyon, juniper, <br />and grass. Elevation is 6,500 to 7,800 feet. The average annual precipi- <br />[anon Ss about 14 to 18 inches; the average annual air temperature is 47 <br />co 52 degrees F., and the average frost-free season is 115 to 135 days. <br />This unit is 40 percent Louviers stony loam, 20 percent Prieta loam, <br />~I <br />i <br />• i <br />~~ <br />^7 <br />i <br />w <br />1 <br />1 <br />• ... <br />~r <br />{ <br />and 20 percent Fort Collins loam. Louviers soils are on side slopes. <br />Prieta soils occur on ridge cops, and Fort Collins soils are in drainage- <br />ways. <br />Included in this unit are 10 percent Travessilla channery sandy loam <br />and 5 percent Rock outcrop. Travessilla soils occur near the crest of <br />ridges and Roc1t outcrop is exposed throushout the unit. <br />The Louviers soil is shallcv and veil drained. IC formed in residuum <br />and colluvium derived dominantly from shale. Typically the surface layer <br />is very channery clay loam 4 inches thick. Ttie upper 9 inches of the <br />substratum is clay Ioam. The lover 3 inches is shaley clay over inter- <br />bedded shale and.silcstohe at a depth of 16 inches. The soil is neutral <br />throughout. Shale fragments range from 10 to 50 percent 1^ the substratum. <br />Shale bedrock ranges from 10 to 20 inches deep. f <br />Permeability of the Louviers soil is moderately sloe. Available eater <br />capacity is very lov, Effective rooting depth is 10 to 20 inches. Runoff <br />is rapid and the hazard of eater erosion is very high. <br /> <br />
