Uee of
nitrogen end phosphorus fertilizer promotes good growth of forage plants.
Proper stocking rates, pasture rotation, and restricted grazing during
vet periods helps to keep the pasture in good condition and to protect
the soil from erosion. Steeper areas of this unit are not suited for
irrigation systems. If properly managed this unit can produce 4 tone
of irrigated grass hay per acre.
The potential plant community is mainly western vheatgrass, blue
_l _., _
}~1R+ST.~..~~~+-~~±wwTA~:r+ ~+nw~~.T~r 1~~.~ ._.:J.C{L_..T"f1_'~'!'T~+!T,~~~w~.~T 1'n'.....~.~.r~-:~`.
*~ ~.' 1. ..~ /SIB __ __ ..
i
page 17

• ~~,•'
I
•
I
I
4
grams, and Junegrass. Ocher less numerous plants [hat characterize
this unit are native bluegrass, green needlegrass, and little blues tem.
The.average annual production of air-dry vegetation is about 1300 pounds
per acre. If the condition of the range deteriorates, sleepygrass, ring
muhly, cholla, and tall rabbitbrush increase. Range seeding is suitable
if the range is in poor condition.
If this unit is used for nonirrigated cropland the main limitaticns
are hazard of erosion, steepness of slope, and insufficient annual
precipitation. Yliieat and oats are the main crops. Because precipitation
is not sufficient for annual cropping, a cropping system chat includes
small grain and summer faliov is most suitable. Maintaining crop residue ~
on or near the surface reduces runoff, reduces soil blowing, and helps to
maintain soil filth and organic matter content. Crops respond to nitrogen
and phosphorus fertilizer. Soil blowing can be reduced by planting crops
in alternate scrips and at right angles to the prevailing wind. This unit
can produce 18 bushels of wheat Sn a vl~cat-fallow cropping system.
