Subject: Additional soil sampling of April 20, 1984
• On April 20, 1984 I took additional soil samples at the New Elk Mine to
supplement those we took this winter. I sampled two locations in. the Midnight
series in the waste disposal area and one location of the soil material below the
refuse in the area of the proposed channel relocation. This was done to comply with
MLRD comments received on the permit revision that had been submitted. 1 also
took one sample from the wall of an excavated pit in the bottom of the refuse
disposal area. This sample was taken at a depth of 60 inches.
As you know, our original soil analysis was based on SCS soil mapping of the
area because of the time of the year the study was implemented. After making this
site reconnaissance in the absence of snow, I now feel that the SCS data is
somewhat unrepresentative of what actually occurs in the refuse disposal area. Our
original report showed a salvage depth of 16 inches, but the 6-12 inches that you put
in the application is probably much loser to the actual case. Besides the slopes
being steeper than the SCS indicated (which we took into account in our first
report), there are also more areas of rock outcrop and subsequently more areas of
shallow soils.
