RECEIVED
6/15/17 1
JUN 2 3 2017
DIVISION OF R1;CLgMAnM
DRMS, MINING &may
I am writing to protest the permit for Sunrise Mining, once Wildcat Mining, to attempt resuming
mining operations in La Plata Canyon. We are a residential, recreational area in La Plata County.
The La Plata River runs directly below this proposed mine site. We all know what happened in
Silverton with the Animas River disaster and having the La Plata vulnerable to the same pollution is
another setting for disaster. The La Plata has a bifurcation downstream that feeds Lake Durango. Lake
Durango supplies Durango West 1, Durango West Il, Shenandoah and the Rafter J subdivisions with their
drinking water. Pollution of the La Plata River would be horrific.
All of the current mining destruction up here has been done without permits, multiple "stop work
orders" and numerous violations_ There is a collapsed illegally built tunnel, illegal roads built destroying
wetlands, illegal bridges built, an entire mill brought in, and multiple containers littering the hillside.
Where was the DRMS during this whole 9 year process??
Please refuse the permit to commence any operations up here besides reclamating what has been
destroyed already. Hold this company (same management, different money) to correcting all its
violations and hopefully we will avoid another disaster.
Lisa Giovanniello
4557 County Road 124
Hesperus, Co. 81326 1
✓f/Ju- C,L NL, O
