United States Department of the Interior
BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT
UNCOMPAHGRE FIELD OFFICE
2465 South Townsend
Montrose, CO 81401
bI in.pav/colorado
Delivered via email to: Clayton.weiii@state.co.us
Clayton Wein
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Reclamation, Mining & Safety
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
RE: Bowie Resources, LLC, Bowie No. 2 Mine
TR -112, Oxbow Drilling
Dear Mr. Wein:
JUN 14 ZOO
We have reviewed the subject technical revision application dated May 11, 2017. The proposed
revision involves both BLM managed lands and Federal coal lease COC61209. We provide the
following comments:
1. BLM sees no apparent benefit of this action from a technical mining perspective. Because
all underground mining activity has ceased and the mine workings are sealed, we anticipate
no additional extraction of the federal coal resource. Lacking such benefit to mining, we
cannot support the proposed revision.
2. In addition, BLM sees a potential detrimental effect on the flexibility and economics of
any future mining operations, should re -opening the mine be proposed. It is reasonable to
assume that breaking the seals in order to balance the mine atmosphere would require any
future operator to initially ventilate a larger mine volume, potentially at greater difficulty
and/or expense.
If you have any questions please call Desty Dyer, Mining Engineer, at 970-240-5302.
Sincerely,
[fir or ars n
Field Manger6
CC: Peter Cowan, BLM Colorado State Office, CO -920
Doug Siple, BLM Colorado State Office, CO -921
