Leachate from the refuse piles and coal stockpile could also degrade the
water quality of the river. Refuse Piles #1, #2 & 4, refuse pile #3, and the
coal pile will encompass 35.1, 15.8 and 4.9 acres at full capacity respectively.
It is assumed infiltration through a refuse pile would be 10% of the annual
precipitation or 1.85 inches based on the average annual rainfall at the mine.
The flow for this assumption over the 55.8 acre piles is 5.3 gallons per
minute. Refuse pile leachate equals 4.9 gpm and coal pile leachate equals
0.4 gpm. The coal pile leachate could actually be less since rainfall is
absorbed by the fine particles in the un -compacted coal pile.
The coal pile leachate is likely similar to the water in alluvial wells AW -1, AW -
2 and AW -3 since the wells have been in place for a number of years. The
average operational conductivity readings for the three wells are 5,583, 7,018
and 3,014 respectively (2012 AHR). The average of the three readings is
5,205 umhos/cm.
The refuse pile leachate is likely similar to the water in alluvial wells AW -15,
AW -16 and AW -17 since the wells have been in place for a number of years.
The average operational conductivity readings for the three wells are 4,580,
3,416 and 3,255 respectively (2012 AHR). The average of the three
readings is 3,750 umhos/cm.
Alluvial wells were installed to monitor groundwater contamination. AW -1,
AW -2 and AW -3 are near the coal stockpile. AW -4, AW -5 and AW -6 are
near the gob pile No. 1. AW -15, AW -16 and AW -17 are below Gob Pile No.
2. AW -11 and AW -12 are below Gob Pile No. 3. The water quality in the
wells is poor to good. Following is a summary of baseline conductivity
measurements (umhos/cm) for the alluvial wells obtained from the Annual
Hydrology Reports.
PR -14 2.05-118 06/14
AW -1
AW -3
Min
8900
3600
Max
9300
3600
Average
9100
3600
Coal Pile Leachate
5205
5205
PR -14 2.05-118 06/14
