Technical Revision 25, Rev. I Schwartzwalder Mine
2.2.2 Soil Sampling
Samples of surface soils at the mine were collected by Cotter in September 2008 to evaluate
- residual uranium and radium concentrations. Sample locations included areas with potential
impacts from mining operations as well as areas cleaned up in previous decommissioning efforts.
Sampling locations were selected based on results of the gamma survey as well as relevant
historical information.
Soil samples were collected to a depth of 6 inches (15 cm), spatially located by GPS, and
analyzed in the field by x-ray fluorescence (XRF), a screening technology used to estimate
concentrations of metals in soil (e.g. uranium). Samples were then packaged
g ) p p ged and sent to a
commercial lab for analysis. For all samples, particles larger than inch were excluded. For
three samples, aliquots representing all particle size fractions ("as-is" samples) were also
analyzed. In addition, concrete foundations were cored to allow sampling of concrete and
underlying soils. Uranium was not detected in any of the concrete samples. The results of the soil
analyses are presented in Table 2-1.
Table 2-1: Soil Radiological Analysis Results
Sample Sample Location Description Uranium Radium-226
Number Ci/ Ci/
#4 NE Water Treatment Plant 15.8 10.7
#5 East Retention Pond, South Side 88 64.6
#6 East Retention Pond, North Side 29.5 15.3
#7 South Retention Pond, North 23.8 17.8
#7 as-is 55.6 32
#8 South Middle Retention Pond, North 32.7 8.5
#9 Pit, East Water Treatment Plant 1.7 0.7
#10 East of Retention Pond, North 69.7 61.9
#11 East Centerline Retention Ponds 73.8 7
#12 East Centerline Retention Ponds 247.1 108
-- #12 as-is 211.9 136
#13 Road West Boneyard 2.6 1.2
#14A Road at MW#00 3 1.4
#1413 Road at MW#00 (Duplicate) 2.6 2.1
#15 Road, Start of Waste Pile 130.7 12
#16 Road South Waste Pile 46.3 13.6
#17 Road at MW#0 228.1 128
#18 Across Creek Old Boneyard 5.2 2
#19 South of MW#2 1.2 0.4
#20 Along Creek Bank NW of MW#3A 3.6 1.1
Mine Permit M-1977-300
Cotter Corporation(N.S.L.) 7 June 2017
