Environmental Analyzed Not Present,Unaffected by Proposed Action or No
Element (Yes/No) Action Alternative, Or Other Reason Not Addressed
The proposed action occurs in Sage Grouse Priority Habitat
Management Area(PHMA) and is expected to directly
and/or indirectly impact the Greater Sage Grouse (GrSG)
North Park population. Under the current GrSG ARMPA,
salable minerals are exempted to restrictions when they are
Wildlife: Special Yes associated with free use permits on already active mineral
Status Animal Species pits. There are three known active leks, all of which are
within 2 to 3 miles of the site. To mitigate the effects of this
pit to lekking, nesting, and brood rearing periods, mining
activities will be excluded from occurring between March 1
and July 15. See the Wildlife: Special Status Animal
Species section for additional information.
The proposed action occurs in winter range for several big
game species and specifically severe winter habitat for
pronghorn species. The location of the proposed action in
relation to the severe winter habitat warrants additional
Wildlife: Terrestrial Yes analysis and is further described in the Wildlife: Terrestrial
section.
The White Tail Prairie Dog, a BLM sensitive species, was
considered, but dropped from further analysis because the
closest prairie dog colony is more than 4 miles away.
5. AFFECTED ENVIRONMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL
CONSEQUENCES
NamONES
BLM East/East Walden Pit is located approximately 5.5 miles east of Walden, Colorado on a
small alluvial gravel-capped mesa. The elevation of the site is approximately 8,500 feet above
sea level. Vegetation within and around the site is sage brush steppe.
BLM East/East Walden Pit is accessible by turning east from Colorado Highway 125 in Walden
onto County Road 12E and driving approximately five miles to County Road 12D. Turn north on
County Road 12D and proceed 3/4 mile to Jackson County Road 1 OH. Turn north on County Road
10H and proceed '/4 mile to the pit access road. The access road is approximately 1/5 of a mile
long and leads to a locked gate. All segments of the access road are gravel-surfaced, well-
drained, and in good condition.
DOI-BLM-CO-N020-2017-0003 11
