On several occasions, District Wildlife,Nlanager Trevor Bnlzer discussed the proposed
mining activities with R2 Incorporate(,staff and received a complete Class It La Plata County Land Use
Permit application for review.
The proposed parcel is located within the County Road 124 corridor.The proposed parcelAs ill A11 area
with diverse wildlifc resources.The CDOW expects to find small mammals,passerine birds,red fox,
tmd coyotes in the vicinity.'fhe property,specifically the La Plata River riparian zone, is:
0 Within the U.S,Fish and Wildlife Service delineated range of the Southwest Willow Flycatcher,
it State and Federally listed Endangered species;
0 1lrithin the known Sumner use areas of local bald eagle populations and Within one mile of
wintei9ug bald eagle concentration Areas;
o Nortliern leopard frog habitat.(The Northern leopard frog is n State species of concern)
Due to its proximity to the come mnity of Mayday And other proposed residential developments,(lie
CDOW expects this project to have less impact on deer and elk populations than development in less
urbanized parts of(lie county.However this area coutiuues to see regular use by deer,elk, black bear,
and mountain lion. Baldy Peak, immediately adjacent to(lie project site,serves as high quality and
highly utilized habitat for these large mammal species. Due to the topography of the Lit Plata NMommins,
13A1(ly Peak and the associated small valleys terminnting to the south serve as important migration
corridors to and from winter range for deer an(I elk.The project site ills within an area mapped as
winter range for elk and is tvithiu one mile of clapped severe winter rango and winter concentration
areas. Increased activity associated with (lie outlined milling activities will likely impact future wintering
elk populations lit the Ai-ca. We recommend efforts to minimize whiter disturbance associated with all
future mining activities As increased activity associated wilh mining will likely affect future win(et'ing
elk populations in the area.
DEPARTMENT OF NATMAL RESOURCES,Mike King,Executive Director
WILDLIFE COMMISSION, iim Glenn,Chair•Robert Shooter,Vice Chart o Marie Smiih,secrelary
Members,Dayrti R.Brougham V Own's Buediler a Dorothea Farris•Allan Jones*John S!a letaiy o Dean"'hinfiem
Er.Offcto Ulembeis,Mke king and John Sa'azar
