h
Memo
Date: Monday, February 27, 2017
Project: Aggregate Industries—WCR, Inc.
To: John Ballegeer, PE, PG
From: Michael Murray, Ph.D.
Subject: Reclamation Test Plots, Lyons Quarry, Support of 112d Reclamation Permit
Operations
Purpose
This technical memorandum presents an approach for establishing test plots to support
reclamation activities at the Lyons Quarry.
Goal:
• Establish test plots to determine successful strategy for reclamation of mine site.
Objective:
1. Assess growth medium materials by ev luating success in establishing vegetation.
2. Assess soil chemistry for each growth media and determine need for fertilizers and/or
other amendments
3. Develop recommendations for full scale reclamation based on pilot study results.
Approach
Test Plots
Test Plot Size
Test plot size considers the following:
• Sufficient size to plant a representative sample of plants proposed for revegetation and
enough individuals of each plant species to determine survival and success. This
information may be used to change plant type and quantities for final reclamation.
• Be large enough to reduce blow-in seed and invasive plant species from adjacent areas
Sufficient size to allow for different soil treatments or seed mixes in same plot
• Sufficient room to allow people to monitor the lot without damaging plants
HDR recommends 30 by 30 foot plots, where there will be two variables per plot (basically 15 ft.
X 30 ft. subplots).
hdrinc.com River Quarry at Parkcenter,412 E Parkcenter Blvd Suite 100, Boise, ID 83706-6659
(208)387-7000
1
