He will go out and clear a
50 x50' radius around the new feature, and clear the other features as well, likely smaller areas (maybe
20 x20) surrounding each feature. The hillside is extremely rugged, steep, and thickly overgrown. The
contractor is anticipating a crew of three men for three days to accomplish the vegetation clearing. The
cost will be $4,800.
The site was flown on March 30. Photographs were taken by Harry Ranney of the Division, and show that the
vegetation has been cleared around the "new" vent (i.e. vent 3). No further surface damage is visible, although
figure 9 suggests that the underground fire may have had a longer term impact on vegetation, with several dead
trees evident above the slide escarpement.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED
N/A
OTHER (SPECIFY)
The GPS points collected at vent locations by Tafi and Litteral in 2017, and by Steve Renner of the
Division in 2003, were plotted and overlain on an aerial image. Lines showing historical mine workings (Bear —
orange, and Edwards — purple) were projected onto the same image, together with lines showing the approximate
outcrop of the coal seams (B — blue, C — purple, and D — green), see figure 1.
The image shows that all the vents are above both the B and C seams, but below the D seam; and that
attributing the fire to either the Bear mine or the older Edwards mine alone is unlikely to be possible.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 7
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 3
Page 3 of 12
