I. Description of the Property
A. The Penrose Pit is a 112c sand and gravel mine located in Fremont County, CO.
The total disturbed area as of March 2017 is approximately 75 acres.
II. Inventory of Weed Species
A. Tim Cazier of the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety did a weed
inventory on March 8, 2016. At that time, the site was found to have Tamarisk
(salt cedar) trees in the permit area.
III. Weed Management Action
A. Prevention
The most important weed management action is to prevent weeds from
becoming established in the first place. Weed management will occur
throughout mining, as a component of site evaluation for stormwater
and MSHA compliance. Weed treatment during mining will reduce weed
management during final reclamation.
B. Weed Control
L Integrated Weed Management is a process by which one selects and
applies a combination of management techniques that will control a
particular weed species or infestation efficiently and effectively, with
minimal adverse impacts to non -target vegetation and allows mining to
continue. Fremont will implement the suggested weed control
techniques and treatment timing as recommended in the Fremont
County Weed Management Preferences Chart (attached).
Tamarisk will be physically removed with a Bobcat loader or by hand,
depending upon location. Fremont will only use mechanical methods and
will burn the litter using appropriate methods.
iii. Fremont will revegetate if necessary when tamarisk is in a reclaimed
area. Fremont will use the reclamation plan guidelines for seeding, etc.
If tamarisk is in the active mining area, mechanical removal will be used
and mining will continue.
