STATE OF
COLORADO Scott -DNR, Eric <eric.scott@state.co.us>
Climax pH measurements at GW#2
1 message
Lazuk, Raymond <rlazuk@fmi.com> Mon, Mar 13, 2017 at 3:37 PM
To: "Scott - DNR, Eric" <eric.scott@state.co.us>
Cc: "Hilshorst, Aaron" <ahilshor@fmi.com>, "Haag, James" <jhaag1@fmi.com>, "Kelts, Diana" <dkelts@fmi.com>
Eric,
On March 2, 2017 Climax called to verbally notify you that, during first quarter WQMP compliance monitoring, the field
pH measurement of groundwater at POC well GW#2 was 6.45 standard units, which is just below the lower NPL limit of
6.5. As per the WQMP, we collected a confirmation measurement on March 8 that showed a pH of 6.47. In my phone
conversation with today you indicated that the CBSG table values (and WQMP) lists pH limits to one decimal place (6.5
—8.5) and that Climax can round pH values to one decimal place, as appropriate, for compliance and reporting
purposes. Therefore, the confirmation measurement is within the NPL range at 6.5 and Climax remains in compliance.
We have seen wide variability with pH at GW#2 in the past, with occasional values below 6.5. As we discussed today,
we intend to increase the monitoring frequency for pH measurements to monthly until such time that the pH levels rise to
historical averages. If pH levels do not rise to within historical averages we will contact you to discuss any needed
follow-up actions.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you for your continued assistance with Climax.
- Ray
Raymond Lazuk
Environmental Manager
Climax Molybdenum Company
Climax Mine
HWY 91 -Fremont Pass
Climax, CO 80429
Office: 719-486-7584
Cell: 719-201-1282
rlazuk(@fmi.com
