Keenesburg Mine 2016 Vegetation Monitoring Report
4 2015-2016 PRECIPITATION
The climate of the mine and surrounding area is typical of the region and characterized by cold
winters and hot, dry summers. CEC has collected local precipitation data at the mine since 1984;
however, only data from 1993 — 2016 is presented here to correspond with the duration of
vegetation monitoring (Appendix B). Average precipitation is generally lowest during the late
fall and winter (October through March) and peaks in April through June (Figure 4).
The Keenesburg Mine Reclamation Permit specifies the use of onsite precipitation from
September to July in calculating the vegetation cover and herbaceous production standards. Total
cumulative precipitation for the period from September 2015 — July 2016 was 16.4 inches. This
represents 139% of the average precipitation amount for the same period (1993-2015). The
pattern and timing of the precipitation was generally similar to the average; however, the peak
fell a little earlier than usual in April and there was another peak is July (Figure 4). Multiple rain
events from April 15 — July 29 resulted in a total of 21 days of rainfall and 11.4 inches which
was 154% of the average rainfall during this period.
Figure 4: 2014-2016 Precipitation and Average Annual Precipitation
6
5
2
0
Sep Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb
5 2016 PEST & DISEASE INSPECTIONS
Mar Apr May
Jun Jul Aug
Habitat Management was contracted to completed quarterly pest and disease inspections at the
Keenesburg Mine in 2015.
