a. Unformed surfaces adjacent to excavation: Three inches (Y) <br />b. Formed or top surfaces exposed to weather; submerged, or in contact with earth: <br />Two inches (2") unless otherwise shown on the Drawings. <br />c. Other Locations: Refer to ACI 318 for conditions not listed herein. <br />2. Cover for reinforcing steel shall not be less than the minimum given above (no minus <br />tolerance) and shall not exceed the minimum by more than one-quarter inch ('/") where <br />concrete thickness is twenty-four inches (24") or less or more than one-half inch ('/2") <br />where the concrete thickness is more than twenty-four inches (24"). <br />E. Reinforcing Adjustment. <br />1. Move only as stated under 3.2.C.6. <br />2. Do not heat, bend, or cut bars unless reviewed by the Engineer. <br />F. Splicing. <br />1. Do not splice bars except at locations shown on the Drawings, unless reviewed by the <br />Engineer. <br />2. Minimum lay distance shall be as shown on the Drawings. If not shown, splices shall <br />be as specified in ACI 318. <br />3. Tie splices securely to prevent displacement during placement of concrete. <br />4. Stagger splices in adjacent bars. <br />5. All wall corner and intersection reinforcing bars shall be continuous around corners and <br />through columns or pilasters. Reinforcing bars shall be extended into connecting wall <br />and hooked/lapped on the opposite face of the connecting wall. <br />6. Unless indicated otherwise, contractor may splice continuous suspended slab or <br />longitudinal beam bars at locations of his choosing, except that top bar splices shall be <br />located at midspan and bottom bar splices shall be located at supports. <br />G. Welded Wire Fabric. <br />1. Install in longest practicable length. <br />2. Lap adjoining pieces one full mesh plus two inches (2") minimum. <br />3. Do not make laps midway between simply supported members, or directly over support <br />members of continuous structures. <br />4. Offset laps in adjacent widths to prevent contiguous laps. <br />5. Extend fabric through contraction joints and construction joints unless otherwise <br />indicated on the Drawings. <br />H. Reinforcement Around Openings. <br />1. All openings in concrete walls and slabs greater than or equal to 8 -inches shall be <br />provided with opening reinforcement per the standard detail located on the Drawings. <br />Concrete Reinforcement February 2017 03200-5 <br />
