3.5
3.6
TEMPORARY DIVERSIONS
A. Temporary diversions may be used when the drainage area is 5 acres or less. Locations
and conditions where temporary diversions may be used include the following:
1. Above disturbed slopes, around the perimeter of construction areas, and above cut or
fill slopes to prevent run on over disturbed areas.
2. Across unprotected slopes, as slope breaks to reduce slope length.
3. Where needed to intercept and convey sediment -laden water to sediment traps.
4. Above reclaimed areas to provide temporary protection from run on flows until re -
vegetation measures are effective.
5. Temporary diversions may also serve as sediment traps when the site has been over -
excavated on a flat grade; or in conjunction with a sediment fence.
B. Construct temporary diversions as follows:
1. Dike Embankment:
Top Width: 2 feet minimum
Height: 18 inches minimum, measured from upslope toe after compaction
Compaction: 92% of maximum dry density in accordance with ASTM D698
Side Slopes: 2H:1 V or flatter
2. Horizontal Spacing of Interceptor Dikes (slope breaks):
Slopes < 5%: 300 feet
Slopes 5-10%: 200 feet
Slopes 10-40%: 100 feet
3. Ditch:
Bottom width: 2 feet minimum; level
Side slope: 2H:1 V of flatter
Grade: 5% maximum, with positive drainage to outlet
4. Outlet: Release sediment -laden runoff through a sediment trap or basin. Flow from
undisturbed areas can be dispersed by a level spreader.
LEVEL SPREADERS
A. Level spreaders may be used at the outlet of temporary diversions to disperse run on
flows that have been intercepted from undisturbed areas.
B. Construct the level spreaders as follows:
1. Grade: Provide a smooth transition from the temporary diversion ditch grade to level
(0%) grade at the spreader. Grade the last 20 feet of the diversion ditch at I% or less.
Erosion and Sediment Controls February 2017 02210-4
