No threatened or endangered species have been identified as dependent on the existing wildlife habitat
provided by the mine site. The mining activity will not diminish the existing wildlife habitat long-term
and will not negatively impact threatened or endangered species.
All mining activity will be located within the northeast portion of the site. Mining will not occur in the
highest elevations of the site (northwest portion) nor will it occur within 50 feet of Mellon Gulch.
Reclamation will incorporate revegetation to an end use of equal or higher quality by including native
prairie plant species to allow native wildlife to reestablish after mining has been concluded.
3.2 Historic/Archaeological Assessment
According to the Douglas County Historic Resources Map, no historic resources are located within the
mine permit area. The closest historic site as mapped is the Arapahoe Canal (of local interest) located
one-quarter mile east and southeast. Mining activity will not affect that canal.
A file search conducted by the Colorado Historical Society, resulted in finding no historic sites, surveys,
or districts within the permit boundary. A copy of the letter report from the Colorado Historical Society
(dated December 8, 1995) is included in Appendix B.
Should any evidence of historic/archaeological findings be found during operation of this facility, all
mining activities shall cease for a minimum of 48 hours to allow appropriate authorities to inspect the
site.
3.3 Floodplain
The 100-year floodplain of Lemon Gulch approaches, but does not enter, the southeast corner of the
proposed permit boundary as shown on the Mine Plan Map. No mining will take place within the 100-
year floodplain boundaries.
3.4 Vegetation and Soils
No rare plants or rare plant communities have been identified on the mine site. The site has been grazed
in the past. The Soil Survey of Castle Rock Area, Colorado, United States Department of Agriculture Soil
Conservation Service, 1974 (USDA SCS) identifies four soil classification and range sites within the mine
permit boundary. A map and descriptions are reproduced from the USDA survey and included in
Appendix C.Two of the soils will be affected by the mining operation, occurring in the northeast portion
of the permit boundary.
Renohill sandy loam. reddish variant: According to USDA SCS, this soil formed in weathered
noncalcareous red shale material, and is found in source areas of clay for manufacturing of brick and
