Topsoil replacement will occur following regrading and scarification of the surface primarily in late
summer and fall. This procedure limits the time that topsoil is exposed prior to revegetation and avoids
moving topsoil when it is frozen or too wet. Topsoil stockpiles will be revegetated with oats as
temporary ground cover until the material is replaced over the disturbed mining area.
Revegetation
Revegetation or seeding will be carried out during the first spring following backfilling and contouring.
Revegetation to predominantly native grassland will be undertaken to stabilize the site and provide
wildlife habitat. After regrading and contouring are complete and based on the soil test results, the
surface will, if necessary, be treated with organic and inorganic amendments. Following this treatment,
the surface will be scarified to aid the penetration and dispersion of the amendments. Topsoil will then
be spread. This material will provide seed, plant parts, and soil microbes for nutrients.
Revegetation Seed Mix
The area will be seeded according to the following mixture.
Species 00 Percem ill Mix pAillinwn)
Rates
Drilled Seeding Bi oadcast
Rates PLS#;AC Seeding Rates
Big Bluestem 5.5 25 1.4 2.8
Yellow Indiangrass 5.0 25 1.3 2.6
Switchgrass 2.5 25 0.6 1.2
Sideoats Grama 4.5 5 0.2 0.4
Western Wheatgrass 8.0 5 0.4 0.8
Prairie Sandreed 3.5 15 0.5 1.0
Blue grama may be substituted for sideoats grama at the rate of four pounds PLS/acre. The rates given
are for broadcast seeding which is the method preferred at the present time. Division of Wildlife will be
contacted prior to the commencement of any disturbance on site to identify existing plant species. The
Reclamation Plan shall specify reseeding of the site with the same species of native grasses previously
found on site. The mix used shall be reviewed by Colorado Division of Wildlife and approved by Douglas
County.
Seeding Method
Seeding will be accomplished using a seed drill properly equipped to meter the native grasses of the mix.
A Truax-type of range drill should be used for seeding where possible. For areas where a drill cannot be
used, the seed should be broadcast and covered by mechanical means to give from 0.5 to 0.75 inch of
soil cover. If broadcast, the seeding rate given should be doubled.
