Approximately eight inches of topsoil will be removed and stockpiled. Overburden depths, ranging from
five to seventeen feet, and waste material will be removed and stockpiled. Clay will then be mined by
first ripping with a dozer and then pushing it into stockpiles or by using a scraper. Average thickness of
the clay lens is 27 feet, with the deepest area being 45 feet below the existing ground surface.
Mining will not disturb more than 20.8 acres. Each segment will result in a topsoil stockpile, an
overburden stockpile, and an excavated mine pit. Overburden will then be dozed back into the pit after
each mining segment. Stockpiled clay will average 25,000 tons. A new stockpile will be started as the old
stockpile is depleted.
Clay will be hauled from the stockpile by loading into tractor-trailer trucks using a front-end loader.
Mining equipment (dozer and scraper) will be located on the mine site during active mining operations
only. As haulage will be on a demand basis, the front-end loader will remain on-site during hauling
episodes.
2.3 Mine Phasing
No more than 20.8 acres will be worked at any one time before reclamation commences.
Time Table
PHASE NUMBER ACRES APPROXIMATE APPROXIMATE*
TONNAGE TIME PERIOD
Phase 1 5.8 112,000 5.6
Phase 2 5.5 108,000 5.4
Phase 3 9.5 180,000 9.0
TOTAL 20.8 748,800 20 years
*Assumes production of 25,000 tons of clay per year.
2.4 Reclamation Process
The post-mining land use will be rangeland and wildlife habitat. All reclamation shall be completed by
July 10, 2032. The approximate post-mining land form will result in a depression approximately 15 feet
below the original ground surface with all slopes graded to no steeper than 3h:1v, as shown on the
Reclamation Plan Map.
Regular 112 Permit application for mining and reclamation will be submitted to the Colorado Division of
Minerals of Geology at a later date. That permit application will also be submitted to Douglas County.
The general reclamation process and purpose are presented below.
Reclamation will take place concurrently with mining with no more than 20.8 acres being disturbed at
any one time before reclamation commences. Vegetation will be removed, and then available topsoil
