2016 Recommended Modifications to the West Elk Mine Hydrologic Monitoring Network 39
values ranging from 7.27 to 8.29 s.u. TSS values for this stream for the period of record are
variable, ranging from 38 to 480 mg/L, and averaging 187 mg/L, compared to baseline values
ranging from 186 to 296 mg/L. Dissolved iron values are low, ranging from 0.02 to 0.2 mg/L,
and averaging 0.09 mg/L, compared to baseline values ranging from 0.05 to 0.10 mg/L. Total
iron values are variable, ranging from 1.27 to 12.3 mg/L, averaging 6.0 mg/L, compared to
baseline values ranging from 7.88 to 9.04 mg/L. Elevated total iron values are likely caused by
elevated sediment levels (from iron rich source rock) in the stream during peak flow sampling
events. The time -series water quality graphs for Lower Raven Gulch are shown in Figure 31.
August 2016 HydroGeo, Inc.
