2016 Recommended Modifications to the West Elk Mine Hydrologic Monitoring Network 24
2.1.2.2 Spring E-13-1
Spring E-13-1 is located in the lower West Flatiron drainage that is the first tributary entering
Raven Gulch from the west (Map 1), which is tributary to the North Fork of the Gunnison River.
This spring was monitored for the West Flatiron mine panels area and the Box Canyon mine
panels area. This spring is located about one-half mile to the east of the end of the B -Seam
longwall Panel 18, which was mined in February 2008. This spring issues from sandstone beds
above the F -seam, and flows throughout the summer months at generally less than 0.5 gallons
per minute (gpm). Flow typically diminishes in the late summer months. This spring was
voluntarily monitored intermittently between 2002 and 2004 (HydroGeo, 2016b), and was
officially added to the WEM monitoring network in WY 2005 (CDRMS, 2006). A time -series
flow graph for Spring E-13-1 is shown on Figure 19.
Time -series water quality data from Spring E-13-1 do not indicate any adverse trends in water
quality. There are no baseline field or laboratory water quality values for this site because it was
initially monitored voluntarily (HydroGeo, 2016b) prior to officially being added to the
monitoring network in 2005 (CDRMS, 2006). The laboratory ECs for this spring for the period
of record are relatively consistent, ranging from 777 to 1,130 µmhos/cm and averaging 1,025
µmhos/cm. TDS values are similarly consistent, ranging from 484 to 740 mg/L, and averaging
634 mg/L. The field pH values over the period of record range from 7.41 to 8.75 s.u., and
average 8.26 s.u. TSS values are variable, ranging from 13 to 1,130 mg/L, and averaging 208
mg/L. Dissolved iron values are variable, ranging from ND to 0.82 mg/L. Total iron values are
also variable, ranging from 0.16 to 12.90 mg/L, and averaging 3.86 mg/L. The high TSS and
total iron values in June 2005 (total iron) and May 2015 (TSS and total iron) are likely caused by
August 2016 HydroGeo, Inc.
