2016 Recommended Modifications to the West Elk Mine Hydrologic Monitoring Network 20
2.1.1.8 Spring CR -12 (Decreed Spring #12)
Spring CR -12 is located in Lone Pine Gulch above Panel 5 in the Northwest B -Seam historic
mine area (Map 1). It issues from alluvium on the south side of the gulch. This is a perennial
spring, but the volume of flow diminishes in summer and autumn. This spring has been
monitored since 1993 and was undermined in December 1993. The spring flow measurements
were highly variable from 1993 to 1997, with no flows in the spring of 1994, and maximum
flows in the spring of 1997. A time -series flow graph for Spring CR -12 is shown on Figure 15.
Figure 15. Flow in Snrina CR -12
Time -series water quality data from Spring CR -12 do not indicate any adverse trends in water
quality. There are no baseline water quality values for this site due to insufficient flows for
baseline measurements and sampling (WWE, 2001; MCC, 2016). The laboratory ECs for this
spring for the period of record are variable, ranging from 906 to 1,440 µmhos/cm and averaging
1,204 µmhos/cm. TDS values are also variable, ranging from 660 to 970 mg/L, and averaging
777 mg/L. The field pH values for this spring over the period of record range from 7.28 to 8.90
s.u., and average 8.32 s.u. TSS values are variable, ranging from ND to 332 mg/L. Dissolved
iron values range from ND to 0.16 mg/L. Total iron values range from 0.04 to 3.14 mg/L, and
average 1.16 mg/L. The time -series water quality graphs for Spring CR -12 are shown in Figure
16.
August 2016 HydroGeo, Inc.
