All mine facilities are <br />discussed in greater detail later in this section under the subtitle "Mine <br />Facilities" and are shown on the Mine Surface Facilities Map (Map 18). <br />To the extent possible, EFCI attempts to keep all mine development within <br />the recoverable coal seams both to minimize any unnecessary underground <br />disturbance and to maximize economic benefits associated with progressive <br />development. Initial development of the Dorchester No. 1 (Southfield) <br />Mine involved extension of five (5) parallel main entries from the mine <br />face-up area. The five (5) entry system as illustrated by figure 14, Five <br />Entry Main/Sub-Main System, was extended approximately 400 feet from the <br />portals and then two (2) additional entries were added to establish a <br />seven (7) entry main system. <br />Dorchester carried the seven (7) main entries as illustrated by Figure <br />15, Seven Entry Main System, approximately 2,900 feet to the southwest <br />• with development in the Red Arrow Seam and then ramped up to access <br />available reserves in the Jack O'Lantern Seam. Development along the <br />seven (7) entry main system proceeded to the southwest approximately 2,600 <br />feet within the Jack O'Lantern Seam and then turned west, terminating <br />after approximately 3,200 feet of development. EFCI has continued <br />development in the Jack O'Lantern Seam extending an additional set of main <br />entries approximately 600 feet on the northern extension and then turning <br />and progressing westward an additional 3,300 feet to the limit of the <br />current advance. <br />In addition to development of main entries within both the Jack O'Lantern <br />and Red Arrow Seams as described above, Dorchester/EFCI also established <br />sub-mains and panels in the Red Arrow Coal Seam extending both to the <br />north and the south from the mains as illustrated by the Mine P1 an Map, <br />(Map 17). <br />Mining Operations. As mains and submains have been extended, cross cuts <br />• have been established at intervals of approximately 40 - 150 feet to <br />increase progressive coal recovery, maintain effective ventilation and <br />provide access to adjacent mining panels.
