(8) Piles of vegetation:
There will be no piles of vegetation. Any trees or shrubs which need to be removed will
either be taken to an approved landfill or disposed in the backfill in a dry portion of the
existing mining operation.
3.1.10 Revegetation:
(1) Establishment of a diverse, effective and long lasting vegetative cover that is
capable of self-regeneration without continued maintenance:
The regraded pit floor and side slopes will be seeded and stabilized according the seed mix
found in the existing permit and as slightly modified with this Amendment.
(2) Tree establishment:
No tree planting is proposed.
(3) Establishment of rangeland:
The seed mix approved in the existing permit was designed to return the mined land to a
post mining land use of rangeland.
(4) Consideration of environmental and biological factors in the Reclamation
Plan:
Since the post mining land use is rangeland, the primary goals of the revegetation plan are
to ensure site erosion control and stability and to provide food for domestic livestock.
These goals may be met through a combination of physical and biological measures. The
NRCS will be consulted to ensure that these goals are met.
(5) Ensure the establishment of a diverse and long-lasting vegetative cover:
In those areas where vegetation will be established(If mining results in rock highwalls,
some may be left as raptor habitat and will not be seeded.), the site will be prepared to
provide the best chance for the selected plant species becoming established. Following is
what is typically recommended by a local NRCS Field Office in order ensure seeding
success:
(6) Seedbed Preparation:
The seedbed should be well settled and firm, but friable enough that the seed can be drilled
at the recommended depth. Soils having been compacted by traffic or other equipment
should be tilled(deep-chiseled or ripped if necessary)breaking up restrictive or compacted
layers, and then harrowed and rolled or packed to produce the required firm seedbed. If the
seed is to be broadcast seeded, then the seedbed should be settled and fairly firm, but left
39
