F)' Newmont I County Road 82 Guardrail Analysis
J Technical Memorandum
Technical Memorandum
Date: Tuesday, January 17, 2017
Project: CR 82 Roadside Safety Assessment
To: Erik Munroe, Newmont; Cheyne Mann, Newmont
From: Robert Manzanares, HDR, PE; Cory R Beasley, HDR, PE
Subject: County Road 82 Guardrail Analysis (Response to Comment#51)
1 Background
The purpose of this technical memorandum is to provide analysis of current roadside conditions
on County Road 82 (CR82) to determine if the current ditch and roadside safety meets the
AASHTO Roadside Design. The task was to assess the existing roadside clearance and provide
a professional engineering opinion if the existing conditions warranted additional barrier (i.e.
guardrail or berm)to protect the traveling public from the vertical hazards associated with the
East Cresson Mine -Wildhorse Extension (WHEX). The location of CR82 in of analysis is
approximately half a mile east of the Ironclad mine entrance and extends 1200 feet east to the
overlook pull off area, see Figure 1.
The Department of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS) has requested the following:
"Please provide a rigorous demonstration, certified by a Colorado licensed professional
engineer who is experienced with traffic safety appurtenances, which confirms the 15-20
foot wide ditch is sufficient to protect the public from the vertical hazards associated
with the WHEX along CR82 or propose an alternate barrier (e.g., guardrail or berm) that is
adequately protective."
' ,,::TCR82E
1 yfy,.i ffi jTN`{
1 ' Y
\ 17
viv
AREA OF ANALYSIS N
'.. y
Neasek
t ,s :,
WHEX HIGHWALL
(:440-tile;J
_ .
✓ - I T OVERLOOK PARKING
IRONCLAD ENTRANCE roelyd
a .;AY t NOT TO SC ALE sli .t •
a,
Figure 1
hdrinc.com 2060 Briargate Parkway,Suite 120,Colorado Springs,CO 80920-1045
(719)272-8800
1
