• Remediation efforts began at the uppermost and lowermost affected lifts
simultaneously. Primary focus centered on reestablishing safe egress routes along
affected benches and securing overall stability. Cosmetic work is ongoing.
• All released solution remained on liner and would have reported to operational
recovery systems. Due to sub -freezing temperatures occurring at the time of the
event a small amount of solution on the 9800 level did become frozen. Any frozen
solution will slowly thaw as temperatures increase, draining down to the liner and
captured by existing solution recovery systems.
b. Any known or adverse impacts to human health, property or the environment
As all solution and washed out material remained on liner and the immediate response
short time frame between the event and the remediation process, no known impacts to
human health or the environment have been observed or are expected. to occur.
c. Monitoring and analyses that are necessary to evaluate the situation and
corrective actions
As the failure occurred on a lined facility there are no impacts expected to human health
or the environment that require monitoring or analysis.
Daily inspection of the remediation effort will be conducted by operational personnel. If
any changes are observed within the facility the Geotechnical department will be
immediately notified.
The Site Geotechnical Department initially inspected the location on the morning of
January 4th, 2017 and it was determined that the washout did not pose stability issues to
the heap leach facility. The washout only affected in the vicinity of the crevice itself and
there were no additional visual indications for this area to become larger. There were no
cracks around the crevice.
A follow up inspection was completed on January 11th to evaluate the progress of
remediation works which verified no visual indications of any stability issue for the heap
(Figure 3).
