The County ceased mining operations in 2001. The site is currently
open to the public for passive recreation, primarily fishing and hiking. Tyler O'Donnell of
DRMS conducted an inspection of the site on April 23, 2014. No possible violations or
corrective actions were noted. The slopes along the western and southern shorelines of
Debetz Pit were discussed and a suggestion was made for the County to submit a Technical
Revision to address the reclamation of those slopes. The County submitted a Technical
Revision and on October 16, 2014, TR-02 was approved by DRMS.
On August 21, 2013, DRMS approved Technical Revision No. 1 to the Permit M-1977-283,
which is now incorporated into the Permit conditions. The Technical Revision was to allow
up to 75,000 of inert fill material to be placed into Debetz Pit between September 2013 and
December 2015. The inert fill material was generated by Metro Wastewater Reclamation
District's (MWRD) South Platte Interceptor project.
The inert fill operations at Debetz Pit have concluded, and approximately 60,000 cubic yards
of fill material was placed at Debetz Pit. Approximately 4.7 acres of water surface area has
been eliminated by the inert fill operation. Per a recommendation made by Tyler O'Donnell
during the April 2014 inspection, the southern shoreline was stabilized in late spring of 2015;
trees were planted along the southern edge of the pit to serve as a visual and ecological buffer
from the adjacent golf course.
In October 2016, the entire area of clean fill, approximately eight acres, was homogenized
using a dozer ripper in order to prevent the stratification of the soils that had previously been
delivered to the site. Some spraying of the area was performed at that time, mainly the
perimeter of the clean fill area. The County will start implementation of the final reclamation
activities (final grading, seeding, tree planting) in the spring of 2017.
---------- - --- ----- --- BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS -- --- --------- -- -- --- --------
Eva J.Henry Charles"Chaz"Tedesco Erik Hansen Steve O'Dorisio Jan Pawlowski
DISTRICT 1 DISTRICT 2 DISTRICT 3 DISTRICT 4 DISTRICT 5
