Cultural Resource Re -Visitation Form
Resource Number: 5MF.1652 Temporary Resource Number:
to be off.
13. Threats to Resource: ❑ Water Erosion ❑ Wind Erosion ❑ Grazing ❑ Neglect ❑Vandalism
❑ Recreation ® Construction ❑ Other (specify):
14. Existing Protection: ❑ None ❑ Marked ❑ Fenced ❑ Patrolled ❑ Access controlled
® Other (specify): Avoidance measures by Colowyo
Comments: Colowyo is avoiding the site. OAHP is requiring a professional archaeologist conduct regular
revisits to assess the effectiveness of avoidness measures.
15. Recorder's Management Recommendations:
The site should continue to be avoided pending additional subsurface testing to determine whether or not unobserved
subsurface cultural material is indeed present at the site.
16. Known Collections, Reports, or Interviews:
Most Recent Report:
A Class III Cultural Resource Inventory For Colowyo Coal Company's Collom Mine Project, Moffat and Rio Blanco
Counties, Colorado prepared by TRC Mariah Associates in 2006.
17. Site Description/Update:
Site 5MF.1652 was originally recorded in 1983 by Mariah Associates for the Danforth Hills Utah International project.
The site was recorded as a prehistoric camp and broad lithic scatter. It was relocated in 2005 by TRC and found to be
in the same condition as reported in 1983 despite noted impacts from the construction of State Highway 51, an
overhead power line, and collection of artifacts. Two features were observed, a light charcoal stain with heat altered
rock (HAR) and a second charcoal stain with no HAR. The artifact assemblage consisted of one side -notched projectile
point of tan oolitic chert, two chert and two quartzite bifaces, two scrapers, two utilized flakes, and over 100+ white
chert lithic flakes.
In 2015, Tetra Tech revisited the site as part of the current undertaking. The site was determined to be in a similar
condition as reported in 1983 and 2005. Observed artifacts during revisit included approximately 30 lithic flakes of white
chert with some red chert and opaque quartzite. Features 1 and 2 were both relocated and appear to be in the same
condition as when they were last recorded. Tetra Tech did record a new site boundary as the available polygon was
incorrect compared to field observations. The new boundary measures 185 m by 94 m.
18.
