Cultural Resource Site Assessments for Collom Expansion Project Colowyo
5MF.4006 — Rock Cairn, Needs Data
Site 5MF.4006 was originally recorded in 1995 by Metcalf Archaeological Consultants for the
Colowyo Coal Company Lease and Exploration Areas: Class III Cultural Resource Inventory. The
site consists of a rock cairn constructed with large sandstone rocks. It measures 250 cm long by
175 cm wide by 80 cm tall. The stones are heavily coated in green and orange lichen. In 2001,
the site was revisited by the BLM Little Snake Field Office and again in 2005 by TRC as part of
the Colowyo Collom Mine expansion project. No new observations were recorded during either
visitation.
In 2015 Tetra Tech revisited the site as part of the current undertaking (Figure 11). The site still
consists of a collapsed rock cairn composed of lichen covered sandstone rocks. The cairn is
unchanged with no significant changes or impacts observed since the 2005 recording.
NRHP Status and Condition Assessment
In 1995 site 5MF.4006 was recommended as needing more data by Metcalf Archaeological
Consultants. BLM Little Snake Field Office concurred in 2001 and TRC concurred in 2005.
Additional information about the site can be most likely obtained through Native American
consultation. Tetra Tech also concurs and no changes or impacts were noted during the 2015
revisit.
Figure 11. Site 5MF.4006 Overview. Facing Northwest. Taken by J.
