Cultural Resource Site Assessments for Collom Expansion Project Colowyo
recommended subsurface testing in order to determine if the faunal remains and staining are both
cultural in origin and part of an intact subsurface cultural component. Tetra Tech concurs with the
previous recommendations. The cattle grazing activity along the eastern cutbank has significantly
eroded the sediments in that portion of the site, but no evidence that the impacts affected any
potential cultural manifestations were observed.
Figure 6. The site includes a historic homestead and an open prehistoric camp situated along the
banks of Wilson Creek. The reported prehistoric cultural material included 100+ white chert
tertiary flakes, numerous HAR fragments, three manos, one quartzite flake, three obsidian flakes,
a chert endscraper, and a utilized flake. The historic portion of the site consists of three buildings,
an underground storage structure, a corral, and a surface trash scatter. Building 1 is a log
outhouse, Buildings 2 and 3 are both log structures, and Building 4 is a stone dugout with uncut
stone walls and an earthen roof. The artifact scatter consists of mainly building materials such as
logs, lumber, brick, cement, corrugated metal, and asphalt/tar paper in addition to miscellaneous
trash including utensils, stove parts, nuts, bolts, buckets, wagon/car parts, buttons, fabric, leather
and barrels. The site was revisited in 2005 by TRC as part of the Collom Mine Expansion project.
During this revisit, the prehistoric component was observed to be in similar condition as when it
was recorded in 1995. New material was identified consisting of approximately 15 opaque white
chert debitage, approximately 10 pieces of HAR, and two manos.
In 2015 Tetra Tech revisited the site as part of the current undertaking (Figure 7). The historic
component was found to be in worse condition than when it was previously recorded in 2005.
Tetra Tech July 25, 2016 1
For Officiai Ise Only: Disclosure of Site Locations Prohibited ; 43 CFR 7 10?
