Demonstration of Compliance Climax Molybdenum Company
With Regulation 41 Permit M-1977-493
Given that dissolved manganese is ubiquitous across the Climax property in both shallow and
deep groundwater wells, that the range of Eh-pH conditions is fairly limited, and that there are no
other constituents typical of mine waters (other than iron) which are also present across the site,
dissolved manganese is interpreted as a naturally occurring constituent of groundwater within the
Climax property. While some portion of the manganese may be from mining-related sources, this
background information suggests that other non-anthropogenic sources are likely also present.
This is supported by regional data within Colorado with similar ranges of dissolved manganese
concentrations identified in groundwater. This additional available information is informative in
assessing the historical manganese data from the property.
December 2016 5
