The location of the Powell Gravel Pit and historical pits or quarries in the <br />surrounding area. <br />Historically there have been several gravel pits or quarries in the corridor <br />along US Highway 40 (HWY 40) and near the Powell gravel pit. Using the U. <br />S. Geological Survey (USGS) Mellen Hill, CO., 1962, (o40108b8), 7.5 minute <br />series (1/24,000) topographical map, we found four gravel pits or quarries in <br />the vicinity (Map 1). The Powell gravel pit was not shown on the 1962 map. <br />It is believed that the pit was mined extensively in the late 60's and early <br />70's, with the product being used in the construction of HWY 40. <br />In 1995 Mr. Powell applied for a permit to reopen and operate the pit. The <br />primary product is gravel and stone, with sand a secondary. Small amounts <br />of clay, that has properties similar to bentonite, have been removed and <br />utilized for sealing stock ponds.
