corresponding soils. Further, three of the geological features have naturally
steep slopes (25-75% slope, Schroeder, 2004), plus there is a lack of topsoil
due to the early 1970's operations, and a dry climate (average precipitation,
10 in.). This combination will present challenges and difficulties.
With changing variables (e.g. drought) that directly impact the success or
failure of reclamation, the suggested methods are by nature plastic over
time. We suggest that the owner/operator monitor outcomes and alter
methods as needed to ensure success. Appendix A provides multiple options
and suggestions.
The final use of the pit will be in support of a cow/calf operation and
ranching. As such, recommendations for seed mixes and management
options will be driven by the ultimate end use. Additionally, wildlife frequent
the area, and as such seed mix species selection will enhance forage for
Nmrsiffn
Management/ Interim Reclamation
The State of Colorado regulations do not specifically address a
management/interim reclamation scenario. We are using the term to define
the period of mining and possible idleness before final reclamation. There
are a series of actions that could be implemented during operations that will
enhance the outcome of the final reclamation plus be in keeping with the
spirit of wise use of natural resources. The suggested actions are also in
keeping with Construction Materials Rule 3 and 6.3.
We suggest the following measures to increase the success of a final
reclamation:
----- --- u — 2S 1 P a g e
COIN: I'Dl'1'UL CRAVU.
