Water Resources
The pit is situated in the Headwater Dripping Rock Creek HUC, between the
West and East Twin Washes. See Map 2 and Appendix E, Map E6.
Soils, Geology, and Vegetation
In 1995 during the permitting and reclamation planning process, the Natural
Resources Conservation Services (NRCS, Appendix G) classified the pit as
follows:
• Torriorthents-Rock outcrop, shale complex with 30-75% slopes as the
majority of the location, current MUSYM# 198.
Eghelm, loamy fine sand with 0-3% slope, current MUSYM# 62.
The Geology Quadrangle Mellen Hill, 1969 has resolution and more detail
then the available soils maps (Map 3 - 4 and Appendix E). We concur with
the NRCS classification of Torriorthents- Rock outcrop, shale complex but
would like to add the Torriorth ents- Rock outcrop, sandstone complex. This
addition to the soils is based upon the complex geology shown in the geologic
Map 4. Using ArcMap, it was determined that 7.9 acres (80%) of the pit is
Torriorth ents- Rock outcrop.
The NRCS further determined that the portion of the site classified as
Eghelm, loamy fine sand would fall into Saltdesert Overflow range site class.
No range site description was given for the Torriorthents-Rock outcrops.
Soil depth to bedrock or a restrictive feature, in the Torriorthents (MUSYM#
198, 197 and 160) classification is 0-8 inches of a silty clay loam with 8-12
being weathered bedrock (Schroeder, 2004). The rocky outcrop portions are
defined as areas with less than 4 inches of soil over shale or bedrock.
R -)R: I'"W LI_ GRAVI L 1111. \11." 1A UI I. x.71.
