GB <br />03/2013 <br />MANVEL SERIES <br />The Manvel series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in alluvium derived from soft limestone <br />and shale. Manvel soils are on fans, plains, and interfluves. Slopes range from 0 to 15 percent. The mean annual <br />precipitation is about 305 mm (12 inches) and the mean annual temperature is about 11 degrees C. (52 degrees <br />F.). <br />TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine -silty, mixed, superactive, mesic Ustic Haplocalcids <br />TYPICAL PEDON: Manvel silt loam, grassland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted). <br />A --O to 18 centimeters (0 to 7 inches); brown (IOYR 5/3) silt loam, brown (IOYR 4/3), moist; weak fine <br />granular structure; soft, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine and very fine roots; strongly <br />effervescent, 5 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); clear smooth boundary (8 to 18 <br />cm (3 to 7 inches) thick). <br />Bk1--18 to 64 centimeters (7 to 25 inches); pale brown (1OYR 6/3) silt loam, yellowish brown (IOYR 5/4) <br />moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; moderately hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly <br />plastic; common fine and very fine roots; 2 percent medium distinct irregular carbonate masses in matrix; <br />violently effervescent, 20 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear smooth <br />boundary. (20 to 51 cm (8 to 20 inches) thick) <br />Bk2--64 to 124 centimeters 25 to 49 inches; pale brown (IOYR 6/3) silt loam, yellowish brown (IOYR 5/4), <br />moist; moderate fine prismatic structure; moderately hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very <br />fine roots; 8 percent medium distinct irregular carbonate masses in matrix; violent effervescence, 13 percent <br />calcium carbonate equivalent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); gradual wavy boundary. (48 to 76 cm (19 to 30 <br />inches) thick) <br />Bk3--124 to 200 centimeters (49 to 79 inches); very pale brown (IOYR 7/4) silt loam, brownish yellow (10YR <br />6/6), moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; moderately hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly <br />plastic; 2 percent fine distinct irregular carbonate masses in matrix; violent effervescence, 35 percent calcium <br />carbonate equivalent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4). <br />TYPE LOCATION: Pueblo County, Colorado about 14 miles south of Boone, Colorado; 1,550 feet east and <br />900 feet north of the SW corner sec. 9, T. 23 S., R. 61 W; Flying A Ranch, CO USGS Quad; UTM zone 13 <br />566930 E, 4212360 N; latitude 38 degrees, 3 minutes, 23.4 seconds N and longitude 104 degrees, 14 minutes, <br />13.5 seconds W; NAD 83. <br />RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: <br />Soil moisture: Moist in some part March through May, intermittently moist June through October. <br />Moisture regime: aridic bordering on ustic. <br />Mean annual soil temperature ranges from 9 to 13 degrees C. (48 to 56 degrees F.) <br />Mean summer soil temperature ranges from 19 to 25 degrees C.
