RECLAMATION PLAN
Drill seeding is highly recommended for the pit bottom. The rates in this seed mixture
assumes the seed will be drilled. For drill seeding, harrow and disc surface first. Rip all hard
areas or compacted areas to a depth of at least 18" followed by discing.
If broadcast seeding of the pit floor is done(not recommended)then rip the entire area to
a depth of 18" to 24" followed by thorough discing and double the amount of seed. With
broadcasting, seed within 2 to 3 days of seed bed preparation.
Moist areas on the pit floor as well as a narrow zone along the base of the slopes may
develop a more lush growth and possibly wetland conditions. Because this cannot be determined
beforehand, no species are included that will specifically be adapted to such sites. If these moist
micro-environments do form, it is likely that they will be quickly invaded by appropriate species.
These spots may also be invaded by willows and cottonwood if conditions are suitable. However,
intentionally creating such situations is not advised as such action could be interpreted as
purposely creating forms of vegetation that impact groundwater flows. If they develop naturally
then they are usually viewed as being acceptable, but if intentionally created the action could be
interpreted as a beneficial use of groundwater that might, at some point in the future, require
augmentation of the evapo-transpiration.
If the seed is to be drilled it can be seeded any time between the middle of November and
early May, unless the area to be seeded is a south facing slope in which case the period is mid
November to the end of March. Drill seeding can also be done between late August and late
September, but because fall moisture is often unreliable, seeding at this time may not produce the
best results.
If the seed is to be broadcast, the proper seeding time is between mid-December and the
end of February(level areas and all slopes).
Daniels Sand Pit Amendment (2008) Exhibit E Page 17 of 22
