MINING PLAN
Area. This is almost entirely a downhill run which will tremendously reduce the amount of pumping
needed to discharge the sediment.
Prior to establishing the sediment basin the slopes around the area where the pond will be
placed will be graded to 4 D-1. At first, depending upon exactly what the elevations are in the area of
the pond, no containment berm may be needed on the north side of the sediment basin. But later or if
the elevations are not sufficient to contain the initial sediment, a containment berm around the north
end of the sediment basin will be needed. The new sediment basin will be quite large and the water
will be allowed to spread out over most of the area. As a result, there will be a large water surface
which will allow much of the water to evaporate. What does not evaporate will seep into the ground
and eventually into the gravel and the aquifer under the sand deposit. It is already known that at least
a significant part of the material under the location of the sediment basin contains one or even two
gravel layers as described earlier. Thus, water will not accumulate here as it would if the area was
sealed. Because the water used to wash the sediment is clean and no additives are used to settle the
sediment, the water going into the aquifer will be clean of contaminants. Just south of this location
are the injection wells for the groundwater remeditation program being conducted on groundwater
entering the site from the east. Seepage from the sediment basin will simply combine with this
cleaned injection water.
Cross-Sections
At the end of this exhibit are two cross-sections through the mining area that show not only
the mining area, but how the mining areas will interface with such adjacent or included features as
the new proposed highway, the new Fountain Mutual Ditch, and other adjacent lands. Please refer to
Exhibit C-2 for the location of each of these cross-sections. One of the sections (LJ-1) is exclusively
for the Little Johnson area and is taken directly from that amendment.
Daniels Sand Pit Amendment (2008) Exhibit D Page 28 of 28
